How to Produce a Video DVD
The basic steps:
1. Get some equipment to shoot some video 2. Shoot some video 3. Transfer the video to a computer 4. Make the video watchable (edit it!) 5. Put the video somewhere people can watch it (a DVD in this case)
Ingredients:
- Video cameras/camcorder
- Cnet camcorder reviews
- Cnet Camcorder Buying Guide
- Camcorderinfo.com Review website
- Recording media (depends on camera) - DV tape, mini-DVD, SD Flash card
- Firewire or USB cable to transfer video to computer (so you can edit)
- Computer (1) with a DVD burner running Windows XP, Vista, or Macintosh operating system
(1)-The computer must have a large enough hard drive to hold the transferred video. An hour of mini-DV video translates into 12 gigabytes (GB) of space, so double or even triple that to give a good estimate of what you'll need for capturing and editing. Your best bet is to invest in an external hard drive that uses the computer's USB port.
- Step 1 - Shoot video - Pretty self-explanatory, but here are some tips to think about when recording video.
- Step 2 - Once you have completed the recording, you need to transfer the video to the computer for editing and "encoding". Unless you are happy with the "raw" video you will probably want to edit the video so that the audience will ease into your show. We'll show you how to insert a transition at the beginning and the end of the video that does just that. If you are using a Windows computer, you will use Windows Movie Maker for editing video. If you are using a Macintosh, you will use iMovie. When you're done editing, you need to save the filein a form that is ready for the next step, creating a DVD. If you are using a Mac, you can export to iDVD and start the DVD creation process. If you are on a Windows XP machine you will need to find DVD burning software. The higher end versions of Windows Vista (Home Premium and Ultimate) have a DVD burning program available from Windows Movie Maker.
- Step 3 - It's time to burn your DVD. If you have a Mac, do this. If you have a Windows XP machine, do this. If you have Windows Vista Home Basic Edition or Windows Vista Business/Enterprise, do this. If you have Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate Edition, do this.
